GRADES & LATE WORK
Grade Earning Policy
Only students who have completed all components of our major assignments are eligible to earn a passing final grade in this course. Major assignments are designated with an asterisk (*). All basic requirements, as outlined in each project prompt, must be fulfilled in order for major assignments to earn a passing grade. Midterm grades will be determined based on digital journals through March 10, two quizzes, the sequence analysis, and music video rhetorical analysis.
Checking Grades
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (known as FERPA) prohibits me from discussing your grade over email. At any point, you can come to office hours or make an appointment with me to discuss your grade. I will discuss your grade with you, and you only— not only does FERPA prohibit me from disclosing information about your academic record to your parent, but it is my policy as an educator to only discuss matters of grading with the students enrolled in my course. I grade assignments within two weeks of the due date, so please do not contact me before the end of these two weeks to ask about grades. My feedback for papers and usually includes both general and specific comments. When you receive my feedback, please read my comments carefully. My critiques are meant to help you improve on future assignments. If you need clarification on my comments, please email me once you have read all of my feedback. If, after final grades have been posted, you have a question about the grade you have earned, please contact me the following semester. I am happy to meet with you, but I will not be on campus after the semester’s end.
Late Assignments
Your assignments for this course, including blog posts, papers, quizzes, and examinations are due and/or will be administered on the dates indicated in the syllabus, or as indicated in class. Late assignments are not accepted. All written work is due electronically. You are responsible for checking to make sure your assignments post on time, in the right location, and in the right format. If you are absent on a day when an assignment is due or when an exam is given, you will be allowed to hand in or make-up that work only if the absence is officially excused. Students who are granted an excused absence due to an emergency circumstance have one week from the day they miss to turn in work that was due on that day. If your excused absence is planned (e.g. athletic contest, conference), your work must be turned on time. In some cases, your assignment might have to be submitted before the deadline. Personal obligations, including work and travel, and mechanical failures are not acceptable excuses for late work; I will always accept work submitted early.
